Isaiah 51:1-16

New King James Version

The Lord Comforts Zion^(A)

51 “Listen to Me, ^(B)you who ^[a]follow after righteousness,
You who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were hewn,
And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.
²^(C)Look to Abraham your father,
And to Sarah who bore you;
^(D)For I called him alone,
And ^(E)blessed him and increased him.”

³For the Lord will ^(F)comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places;
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
And her desert ^(G)like the garden of the Lord;
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

⁴“Listen to Me, My people;
And give ear to Me, O My nation:
^(H)For law will proceed from Me,
And I will make My justice rest
^(I)As a light of the peoples.
⁵^(J)My righteousness is near,
My salvation has gone forth,
^(K)And My arms will judge the peoples;
^(L)The coastlands will wait upon Me,
And ^(M)on My arm they will trust.
⁶^(N)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
And look on the earth beneath.
For ^(O)the heavens will vanish away like smoke,
^(P)The earth will grow old like a garment,
And those who dwell in it will die in like manner;
But My salvation will be ^(Q)forever,
And My righteousness will not be ^[b]abolished.

⁷“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
You people ^(R)in whose heart is My law:
^(S)Do not fear the reproach of men,
Nor be afraid of their insults.
⁸For ^(T)the moth will eat them up like a garment,
And the worm will eat them like wool;
But My righteousness will be forever,
And My salvation from generation to generation.”

⁹^(U)Awake, awake, ^(V)put on strength,
O arm of the Lord!
Awake ^(W)as in the ancient days,
In the generations of old.
^(X)Are You not the arm that cut ^(Y)Rahab apart,
And wounded the ^(Z)serpent?

¹⁰Are You not the One who ^(AA)dried up the sea,
The waters of the great deep;
That made the depths of the sea a road
For the redeemed to cross over?
¹¹So ^(AB)the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness;
Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

¹²“I, even I, am He ^(AC)who comforts you.
Who are you that you should be afraid
^(AD)Of a man who will die,
And of the son of a man who will be made ^(AE)like grass?
¹³And ^(AF)you forget the Lord your Maker,
^(AG)Who stretched out the heavens
And laid the foundations of the earth;
You have feared continually every day
Because of the fury of the oppressor,
When he has prepared to destroy.
^(AH)And where is the fury of the oppressor?
¹⁴The captive exile hastens, that he may be loosed,
^(AI)That he should not die in the pit,
And that his bread should not fail.
¹⁵But I am the Lord your God,
Who ^(AJ)divided the sea whose waves roared—
The Lord of hosts is His name.
¹⁶And ^(AK)I have put My words in your mouth;
^(AL)I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,
^(AM)That I may ^[c]plant the heavens,
Lay the foundations of the earth,
And say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’ ”

Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection^(A)

³²^(B)Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed they were afraid. ^(C)Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him: ³³“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles; ³⁴and they will mock Him, and ^[a]scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

Greatness Is Serving^(D)

³⁵^(E)Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”

³⁶And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

³⁷They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.”

³⁸But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the ^(F)cup that I drink, and be baptized with the ^(G)baptism that I am baptized with?”

³⁹They said to Him, “We are able.”

So Jesus said to them, ^(H)“You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; ⁴⁰but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those ^(I)for whom it is prepared.”

⁴¹^(J)And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. ⁴²But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, ^(K)“You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ⁴³^(L)Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. ⁴⁴And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. ⁴⁵For even ^(M)the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and ^(N)to give His life a ransom for many.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus^(O)

⁴⁶^(P)Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. ⁴⁷And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, ^(Q)Son of David, ^(R)have mercy on me!”

⁴⁸Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

⁴⁹So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called.

Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.”

⁵⁰And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.

⁵¹So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

The blind man said to Him, ^[b]“Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.”

⁵²Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; ^(S)your faith has ^[c]made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

God’s Fury Removed

¹⁷^(A)Awake, awake!
Stand up, O Jerusalem,
You who ^(B)have drunk at the hand of the Lord
The cup of His fury;
You have drunk the dregs of the cup of trembling,
And drained it out.
¹⁸There is no one to guide her
Among all the sons she has brought forth;
Nor is there any who takes her by the hand
Among all the sons she has brought up.
¹⁹^(C)These two things have come to you;
Who will be sorry for you?—
Desolation and destruction, famine and sword—
^(D)By whom will I comfort you?
²⁰^(E)Your sons have fainted,
They lie at the head of all the streets,
Like an antelope in a net;
They are full of the fury of the Lord,
The rebuke of your God.

²¹Therefore please hear this, you afflicted,
And drunk ^(F)but not with wine.
²²Thus says your Lord,
The Lord and your God,
Who ^(G)pleads the cause of His people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
The cup of trembling,
The dregs of the cup of My fury;
You shall no longer drink it.
²³^(H)But I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you,

‘Lie down, that we may walk over you.’
And you have laid your body like the ground,
And as the street, for those who walk over.”

God Redeems Jerusalem

52 Awake, awake!
Put on your strength, O Zion;
Put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city!
For the uncircumcised ^(I)and the unclean
Shall no longer come to you.
²^(J)Shake yourself from the dust, arise;
Sit down, O Jerusalem!
^(K)Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion!

³For thus says the Lord:

^(L)“You have sold yourselves for nothing,
And you shall be redeemed ^(M)without money.”

⁴For thus says the Lord God:

“My people went down at first
Into ^(N)Egypt to ^[b]dwell there;
Then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
⁵Now therefore, what have I here,” says the Lord,
“That My people are taken away for nothing?
Those who rule over them
^[c]Make them wail,” says the Lord,
“And My name is ^(O)blasphemed continually every day.
⁶Therefore My people shall know My name;
Therefore they shall know in that day
That I am He who speaks:
‘Behold, it is I.’ ”

⁷^(P)How beautiful upon the mountains
Are the feet of him who brings good news,
Who proclaims peace,
Who brings glad tidings of good things,
Who proclaims salvation,
Who says to Zion,
^(Q)“Your God reigns!”
⁸Your watchmen shall lift up their voices,
With their voices they shall sing together;
For they shall see eye to eye
When the Lord brings back Zion.
⁹Break forth into joy, sing together,
You waste places of Jerusalem!
For the Lord has comforted His people,

Greeting to the Called

¹Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and ^(A)brother of James,

To those who are ^(B)called, ^[a]sanctified by God the Father, and ^(C)preserved in Jesus Christ:

²Mercy, ^(D)peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Contend for the Faith

³Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you ^(E)concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting ^(F)you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. ⁴For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord ^[b]God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Old and New Apostates

⁵But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that ^(G)the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. ⁶And the angels who did not keep their ^[c]proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; ⁷as ^(H)Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the ^[d]vengeance of eternal fire.

⁸^(I)Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and ^(J)speak evil of ^[e]dignitaries. ⁹Yet Michael the archangel, in ^[f]contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, ^(K)“The Lord rebuke you!” ¹⁰^(L)But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. ¹¹Woe to them! For they have gone in the way ^(M)of Cain, ^(N)have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished ^(O)in the rebellion of Korah.

Apostates Depraved and Doomed

¹²These are ^[g]spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried ^[h]about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; ¹³^(P)raging waves of the sea, ^(Q)foaming up their own shame; wandering stars ^(R)for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

¹⁴Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, ¹⁵to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the ^(S)harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

Apostates Predicted

¹⁶These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they ^(T)mouth great swelling words, ^(U)flattering people to gain advantage. ¹⁷^(V)But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: ¹⁸how they told you that ^(W)there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. ¹⁹These are ^[i]sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.

Maintain Your Life with God

²⁰But you, beloved, ^(X)building yourselves up on your most holy faith, ^(Y)praying in the Holy Spirit, ²¹keep yourselves in the love of God, ^(Z)looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

²²And on some have compassion, ^[j]making a distinction; ²³but ^(AA)others save ^[k]with fear, ^(AB)pulling them out of the ^[l]fire, hating even ^(AC)the garment defiled by the flesh.

Glory to God

²⁴^(AD)Now to Him who is able to keep ^[m]you from stumbling,
And ^(AE)to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
²⁵To ^[n]God our Savior,
^[o]Who alone is wise,
Be glory and majesty,
Dominion and ^[p]power,
Both now and forever.
